Understanding your skin

Acne is not a sign that you have failed to look after your skin.

Acne is a common skin condition, but the way it presents can be very different from one person to another. You may be dealing with blackheads, congestion, inflamed spots, painful breakouts, marks left behind after spots have healed, or a combination of these.

Breakouts can be affected by hormones, stress, skin sensitivity, product use, medication and other personal factors. This is why copying another person's routine or adding more active products does not always help. Sometimes it leaves the skin more sore, dry and difficult to manage.

At ClearSkin4u, we look at the full picture before recommending treatment. We do not diagnose medical conditions or prescribe medication. Our role is to support suitable skin concerns, improve your routine and recognise when medical advice is the safer next step.

You do not need to arrive with perfect product knowledge. Bring the products you currently use, a list of anything prescribed by your GP and, where helpful, photographs showing how your skin changes over time.

Common acne concerns

Support that starts with what your skin is doing now.

The words people use to describe acne are not always clinical, and that is fine. You may simply know that your skin feels sore, keeps flaring in the same area or never seems to settle.

Breakout pattern

Cyclical or jawline breakouts

Some clients notice that breakouts appear at a similar point each month or repeatedly affect the chin and jawline. We can discuss the pattern, your routine and supportive options, while recommending medical advice where needed.

Inflammation

Red, sore or reactive skin

When skin feels hot, tight or easily irritated, adding stronger products may make it harder to manage. A calmer plan may begin with reducing irritation and supporting the skin barrier.

Congestion

Blackheads and blocked pores

Congestion can be affected by product choice, oil, dead skin and picking. We look at what may be contributing before deciding whether a facial, peel or routine adjustment is suitable.

Adult skin

Breakouts that begin later in life

Acne is not limited to teenagers. Adult breakouts can feel especially frustrating when the products that once worked no longer suit your skin.

After a flare

Red or brown marks

Flat marks left after a breakout are different from textured scarring. Understanding the difference helps us choose a safer and more useful plan.

Texture

Post-acne scarring

Once active acne is well controlled, suitable treatments may be considered for uneven texture and some forms of acne scarring. A consultation is needed before any treatment is recommended.

The ClearSkin4u approach

A clear plan without overwhelming your skin.

Our aim is to help you understand what your skin may need, what should be left alone and what can be changed gradually.

We listen first

We discuss when the problem began, where breakouts appear, how they feel and how they affect your confidence.

We review your routine

We look at cleansers, exfoliants, serums, moisturisers, SPF, prescriptions and any treatments you have already tried.

We agree priorities

The first goal may be calming irritation, simplifying products or supporting active breakouts rather than trying to treat everything at once.

We build from there

Your plan can be reviewed as your skin changes. Recommendations are adjusted rather than followed blindly when something is not working.

Treatment and homecare

Your plan should fit your skin, not a standard package.

The right starting point depends on whether your main concern is active breakouts, sensitivity, congestion, post-acne marks or scarring. Not every treatment is suitable for every stage.

Depending on your consultation, we may discuss professional homecare, barrier-supportive facials, carefully selected peels, LED support or other suitable treatments available at the clinic.

Microneedling may be considered for suitable post-acne scarring once active, inflamed acne is controlled. It is not treated as a general solution for every breakout.

  • A manageable morning and evening routine
  • Changes introduced gradually rather than all at once
  • Professional treatment only where it adds value
  • Review points based on how your skin responds
  • Clear advice when GP or dermatology support is more appropriate

Active acne, marks and scars

These concerns can look similar, but they are not the same.

Working out what you are looking at is an important part of choosing a sensible next step.

Active acne

Current blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots, pustules, nodules or cysts. The priority is usually to control active breakouts and reduce the risk of further marks or scarring.

Post-acne marks

Flat red, pink, purple or brown areas that remain after a spot has healed. These are colour changes rather than an alteration in the skin's texture.

Acne scarring

A lasting change in texture, such as dips, indentations or raised areas. Treatment choice depends on the type of scar, skin history and whether acne is still active.

Confidence matters

Acne can affect far more than how your skin looks.

It can change how you feel about photographs, makeup, work, social plans and even being seen without covering your skin. Those feelings are not shallow and they should not be dismissed.

Gemma's own experience with inflammatory skin concerns has shaped a calm, judgement-free approach. You will not be blamed for your skin or made to feel that you simply need to try harder.

Knowing when to refer

Some acne needs medical treatment.

A skin clinic is not a replacement for a GP or dermatologist. We will be honest when your symptoms need medical assessment before, or instead of, a clinic treatment plan.

  • You have moderate or severe acne
  • You have large, painful nodules or cysts
  • Your acne is worsening quickly or leaving scars
  • Your skin is infected, very swollen or unusually painful
  • Your acne is having a serious effect on your mental wellbeing
  • You may need prescription treatment or a medication review

We can still support your skin routine alongside medical care where it is safe and appropriate, but we will not ask you to stop prescribed medication without speaking to the clinician who prescribed it.

"The goal is not perfect skin. It is healthier skin that you understand and feel more confident living in."

Acne consultation questions

What clients often ask before booking.

Can ClearSkin4u diagnose acne?

No. We can assess the visible condition of your skin, discuss your history and provide suitable cosmetic skin support, but we do not provide a medical diagnosis. Where symptoms suggest that medical assessment is needed, we will recommend speaking to your GP or a dermatologist.

Can you help with hormonal acne?

We can support skin that appears to flare in a cyclical pattern and help you build a more suitable routine. We cannot diagnose a hormonal condition or alter medication. Medical advice may be recommended if the breakouts are persistent, painful or severe.

Do you treat cystic or severe acne?

Large, painful nodules or cysts should be assessed by a GP because appropriate treatment can reduce the risk of scarring. We may be able to support your skin barrier and routine alongside medical treatment, subject to consultation.

Will my skin have to get worse before it improves?

Not necessarily. Some products can cause temporary changes, but severe irritation is not treated as proof that a routine is working. We want to know if your skin becomes painful, swollen, very dry or noticeably worse so the plan can be reviewed.

Is microneedling suitable for active acne?

Microneedling is generally considered for suitable acne scarring rather than being performed across active, inflamed breakouts. We first look at whether the acne is controlled and whether another approach is safer.

How long will it take to see a difference?

There is no honest single timescale. It depends on the type and severity of the concern, your current routine, any medical treatment and how your skin responds. Acne support is usually a process rather than a one-off appointment.

Will I have to replace every product I own?

No. We review what you already use and keep suitable products where possible. A simpler routine is often easier to follow and kinder to reactive skin than changing everything at once.

Can you help with acne marks and scars?

Yes, subject to consultation. Flat marks and textured scars need different approaches. Active acne usually needs to be controlled before treatment for scarring is considered.

What should I bring to my consultation?

Bring a list or photographs of your current skincare, details of any prescription products, information about previous treatments and photographs of past flare-ups if your skin changes from week to week.

Are online consultations available?

Yes. Online consultations are available for clients who want professional guidance on their current routine, homecare and suitable next steps before visiting the clinic.
